Hat Trick Poetry Contest

The first goal was the e-release of Bad Ice. The second goal was the print release on the Champagne Books site. Now it's my Hat Trick, my Amazon release. It seems a few kind souls have bought a copy already because it has a ranking. Thanks, and enjoy!

If you've already enjoyed the book, please toss in a little review. It can only help!

To celebrate the Amazon print release, I'm holding a little hockey theme contest. Don't worry -- you non-hockey types will have a shot. All you have to do is write a short poem using the following words:

Puck
Ice
Pond
Stick

It doesn't have to be a GOOD poem, but try to entertain the other posters. I'll take each poem and put it in a hockey helmet. We have several in the house. My assistant (whoever I can recruit) will draw the winner out of the helmet on Saturday, November 15th during CBC's Hockey Night in Canada.

The winner will receive an autographed copy of Bad Ice.

(Once again, I extend infinite thanks to those who expressed their support during a difficult time. I appreciate every message and love you all.)

Being Canadian

We look at the Pond and see form to ice. We see ourselves with a stick inhand and our lucky puck.
Its only July and thats whats in the heart of every Canuck..

"A Bone"

On the pond warriors gather andtime seems to stop.
Each player grasps his stick, no better weapon coined.
At center ice, the leaders await the leaden puck drop,
the moment that signals the battle is joined.

;) (Deleted and reposted with a bit of revision.)

I can't pass on a rhyme. :)

I live to skate upon this pond,
Puck and stick in violent bond,
Body checks far from center ice,
High sticking smashes to add spice.
Taut stitches close the facial cuts,
But mental healing requires guts.
Not a game for the timid soul,
Or artisan slow to defend the goal.
Streaker with skates, can hold the day,
Who knows they’ll have a toll to pay,
In blood and bones, it will come due,
When the puck drops to start anew.

Wow, great start!

Bernard, you must really want a paper copy of Bad Ice since you already own a shiny pdf.

Keep it coming, Chumplites!

You can eliminate me from consideration for the prize, Sandra. I was unable to pass up the word rhyme chance. :)

Sandra,

Just found your website/blog yesterday while attempting to do the Champagne books scavenger hunt! Alas, I was unsuccessful in the hunt and only found 9 of the 10 horns o' plenty but hopefully I'll be more successful in this contest. :-)

Your new book sounds fabulous and so I had to stop by and take a chance! Here's a small little ditty that I like to call...."The Boy Next Door"...hope you like it!

I watch him glide by on the clear smooth ice;
even missing a tooth...he still looks very nice.

We learned how to skate on the pond by our home;
but he plays pro hockey now that he's all grown.

I smile as his stick swishes from side to side;
Soon he'll win the Stanley Cup and fill us with pride.

Now the puck flies into the net and I wait to hear;
the sound of the roaring as the crowd starts to cheer!

You asked for it. Remember, you asked for it!

The Lucky Puck

The moonlight had absconded
As I stared down at the pond
A dread like ice slipped down my back
'Cause we weren't supposed to bond

"Come on!" he whispered in the dark
His stick fell with a clatter
This had started as a mercy thing-
It was not supposed to matter.

I heard him pick up the truant stick
and tap-tap his way to reach me
"So what if I lost my lucky puck?
It served well, but now I'm free"

I turned into his arms at last
I'd never felt so unworthy
of this ex-athlete whose handicap
He transformed into piercing beauty.

Liane squeaks under the line. Okay, the contest is now closed. I'll have my linesman draw the winners in a few moments.

Thanks for visiting and playing, everyone!
