Ugly Sweater Day

It's becoming quite popular. People gather to show off the ghastly sweaters their inlaws gave them for Christmas. This week, we had an Ugly Sweater Day at our newspaper. The winner would receive a couple of movie passes.

I thought I had it nailed until I flashed my neighbour and she said, "It's cute!" I said I'd wear it to her place on Christmas day if she thinks it's so cute.

When I got to work, I discovered another employee had chosen the exact same sweater, so we cancelled each other out. We made nice bookends, however, in the staff photo.

I suppose, like query letters, Christmas Sweaters are subjective.

Happy ChristmaHannaKwansika!

  1. Happy Holidays, to you, as well, Sandra! This post reminded me of a What Not To Wear episode I saw recently. Yep - the woman needing (and I mean needing) the makeover wore holiday sweaters for the various holidays all year! Made me swear to throw all mine out as soon as we get home. (Didn't bring any on the bus, as I pretty much only had room for work clothes, ie PJs.)

  2. I'd have to say that cardinal sweater falls in the so ugly it's cute category.

  3. Sandra, it's not ugly, it's cute. I'd be happy to wear it.

Happy Holidays, may you eat, drink and be merry; and stay at home in this dreadful weather we're having.

  4. Oh... I think the worst one I've seen in recent years was a Christmas sweater that looked like the kind of fabric you'd find on a sofa. Only knitted. It was so overdone --arghh!!!

A few years ago, my parents (who had odd tastes in color) bought a cashmere sweater for my husband. It was beautiful.... alas, it was a very BRIGHT red!

  5. You should sell it for thousands to baseball fans in St. Louis...

What are you doing flashing your neighbor by the way???

  7. I'd wear the sweater!

No I wouldn't. But I thought I'd be polite and say I would.

    Merry Christmas Chumplet!

  10. I love your ChristmaHannaKwansika greeting! May I borrow it? (But not the sweater, thank you... :)

Seasons Greetings, Sandra, to you and yours. May 2009 bring you all you desire (especially in the writing arena) and strength to meet any challenges that lie ahead!

  11. Quite artfully arranged photo. It goes really well with the hat. I wouldn't be caught dead in it.

  12. Query letters with very similar plots can wind up coincidentally on an agent or publisher's desk at the same time, much as you and your co-workers seemingly unique sweaters wound up at work together. :) Nice sweater!

  13. Sigh. Ugly T-shirt day would fit the weather here, but ugly T-Shirts quickly pass the bounds of decency.

BTW, I'd love to take the unwanted cashmere sweater for evening walks Red turns black by moonlight, but headlights would show the stop-sign red. Plus, my sweetie would love snuggling into it.

Happy Yule and New Year to you!

  15. Ugly sweater day -- what a great idea! You must have such a good time picking the worst possible sweater each year.

    Happy holidays, Sandra!

  16. Maybe I should wear the sweater while jogging. The sparkles would reflect the headlights of oncoming cars perfectly!

Who am I kidding -- when would I go jogging?

Happy Holidays to my wonderful friends! Now that Christmas is over, I can't wait for Spring.

  17. OK, so it may not be to my taste, but I bet my mother-in-law would love it.

  22. I vote for ugly t-shirts too!
Although I did see my share of fairly bad sweaters when I was on the mainland a few days ago!
I was even wearing one of them...
